Overview

James Thicke is a man whose mysterious past runs as deep as his violent streak. He’s channeled the intensity of his soul into twin passions—success as a screenwriter and marriage to movie actress Regina Baptiste. In the midst of filming his latest script, starring Regina and leading man Johnny Bergs, James receives a video of his wife caught in the most compromising of situations.
Hours later, the clip of the on-set infidelity has hit the Internet and gone viral in the blogosphere and across all channels of social media. James responds to the affront by savagely attacking Johnny Bergs, and the spectacle has both the paparazzi and the police amassing at the married couple’s estate. James goes on the run, but only as far as the city of Downey, California. As James tries to protect Regina from Hollywood’s underbelly, lust, blackmail, and revenge become his constant companions. Does an accidental affair spell permanent danger?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Dickey (Tempted by Trouble) sets a melodrama of infidelity among Hollywood’s glittering stars. James Thicke is a successful screenwriter with everything going for him when his wife, beautiful actress Regina Baptiste, is caught on video having sex with her leading man, Johnny Bergstein. As the video goes viral, Thicke lurches from feelings of bitter betrayal and yearning for vengeance to lingering love and responsibility for his wife. He makes a hasty incognito retreat to a seedy apartment complex, where he instantly and hilariously attracts the attention of a host of quirky and vivid characters as he tries to elude the paparazzi. Unfortunately, he doesn’t stay there, instead spiraling implausibly out of control. The love–hate relationship is for tabloid fans who are in it for the creative plot and Hollywood glitz and don’t care that the characters are flat and unlikable. Kirkus Reviews
What's a financially successful screenwriter to do when his movie-star wife stars in an extremely explicit sex video? Can he possible believe her claim that it was all an accident? Dickey's latest novel (Tempted by Trouble, 2010, etc.) drops the reader into a very hip world starring characters ready-made for the screen. Their finances are vast, their bodies perfect, their troubles worthy of coverage on TMZ. Gorgeous Regina Baptiste, James Thicke's wife, has struggled to be taken seriously as an actor. Yet she has surprisingly starred in an explicit video with Johnny Bergs, aka Johnny Handsome, an actor she previously claimed to despise. James first gauges the world's reaction via social-networking sites. He then attacks Bergs and flees to a seedier part of town while his driver, called Driver, packs up and delivers all of his furniture and electronic gadgets. Hiding out amid a curious assortment of characters, James immediately, repeatedly and with carefully described technical prowess, exacts sexual revenge upon his wife with virtual strangers. His new neighbors include Mr. Chetwyn Holder, who jealously loves his young girlfriend. Mrs. Patrice Evans, who uses exercise not only to keep her body in shape but also to fill the emotional void that is her marriage. Sweet Isabel, a lovely, slightly older woman, offers James conversation and more. Yet Regina still loves James, Bergs' family wants revenge and a mysterious number keeps showing up on James' caller ID. And then there's the mysterious and threatening return of Regina's ex-husband. Dickey has set up an ardent thriller in which James must discover why his wife was in the sex video. Did someone coerce or trick her? How? Could the affair actually have been accidental? The pace is fast, to be sure, yet James' own promiscuity makes his jealousy difficult to sympathize with. A mix of erotica and noir, this novel lacks emotional depth.

Meet the Author

Eric Jerome Dickey
Eric Jerome Dickey

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee Eric Jerome Dickey is the New York Times bestselling author of nineteen novels. He is also the author of a six-issue miniseries of graphic novels for Marvel Entertainment featuring Storm (X-Men) and the Black Panther. He lives on the road and rests in whatever hotel will have him.

Biography

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and earned a degree in computer system technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry working as a software developer, Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. He soon began working the local and national comedy circuit. In the early 1990s the aerospace industry took a downward turn and Dickey found himself "downsized," but took this as an opportunity to embark on a writing career.

Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, Dickey started writing poetry and short stories. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's creative writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing, Voices of the Diaspora: An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called Cappuccino. Cappuccino was directed and produced by Craig Ross Jr. and appeared in coffeehouses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, Cappuccino made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles and is currently on the film festival circuit.

Dickey's book-signing tours for Sister, Sister, Friends and Lovers, and Milk in My Coffee took him coast to coast and helped propel these novels to No. 1 on the Blackboard bestsellers List. His books have been featured in many publications, including Essence magazine and USA Today, and have appeared on the bestseller lists of The Los Angeles Times, Blackboard, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Dickey has appeared as a guest on many television shows, including BET's Our Voices and CNN's Sunday Morning Live.

The things we do in the name of love...

This book was filled with drama and suspense from beginning to end! After reading the last page, I had to reflect on how passionately one can love another, and the risks one is willing to take all in the name of love. Eric Jerome Dickey wove a tale that is quite masterful to say the least. I got into the story and into the heads of the characters. I felt sympathy for James Thicke, despised Johnny Bergs and Bobby Holland, and developed a love/hate emotion for Regina Baptiste. I could envision this story playing out in my head as if it were on the big screen. Eric Jerome Dickey has been absent for a brief time, but this work was well worth the wait!

Not as good as the others

Ejd is one of my fav authors. This one let me down. Only because im not into the hollywood type stuff. This seems like reality tv in a book. I made it to ch 17, and couldnt take anymore. Maybe i wil pick it back up later. Right now, not a good read.

I normally enjoy EJD books. I couldn't wait for this one to come out but once I started reading it, It was just an ok read for me. I guess I was expecting more based off his previous books. Even though this is fiction, the plot started becoming too unrealistic near the end. I'm hoping he comes back with the completion of the Giddeon Series soon or another book like his previous books. Still hats off to Mr. EJD for the entertainment.

    Struggle

All of his books are starting to be too similar. What is his obsession with british characters? I wasnt a fan of the dialogue, everyone spoke with underlying meanings and it started to get frustrating.

I loved this book I am a true fan and am intrigued with everything EJD writes since 1999! This book was great just relax and enter into Mr. Thickes world. I got caught up in his life just like I do for every other character in EJD novels. As with all his books I loved the rhythm of the words on the page and energy of EDJ novels. Sure I put the book down here and there... BUT I picked it right back UP as soon as I could. Thing that I dont like as with all his books is that they have to end :(
Mr Dickey If you write 80 more books I will anticipate each one and buy every last one of them.

    Always enjoyable

Reading an Eric Jerome Dickey offering is sure to draw you in, polarize your opinion and then leave you wanting more, thinking about the characters and story long after the last page has been turned. If you want drama, conflicted love and lust, then this is your book.
