Englishmen and foreigners have long had reason to regard the Bank of England as the most important of all the commercial establishments in the world; it is, therefore, peculiarly incumbent on the Proprietors of that establishment to be jealous of every proceeding, and of every insinuation, that militates either against the well-being of the Bank, or against the honour and characters of the Governor, Deputy-governor, and Directors; to whom, under the charter, the whole management of its affairs is essentially committed.
