Overview

AN ALABASTER BOX IS A HUMOROUS CHRISTIAN NOVEL! INSPIRATIONAL IN PLACES! 335 PAGES IN PRINT! A GREAT FUN READ!

Wesley Elliott, a young man who has tried out for a number of pulpits as a new young minister and turned down ends up being hired in Brookville. The one problem is they have no money to pay him...he does have a parsonage to live in.

Mrs. Solomon Black decides the way they will pay him is by having a Church Fair. Wesley believes that is begging....Mrs. Black says..."then we will beg".

A Novel with humor and inspiration and yet has a neat story to tell....try it....it is
good reading.

Here are a few thoughts on our Author...Mary Eleanor Freeman...Narrated in a firm and objective manner with occasional subtle undertones of humour and irony, Freeman’s stories were deft character studies of somehow exceptional people who, trapped by poverty or other handicaps in sterile, restrictive circumstances, react in various ways against their situations. Her use of New England village and countryside settings and dialects placed her stories as most enchanting!

Here is a sample...Opening of Chapter One...."We," said Mrs. Solomon Black with weighty emphasis, "are going to get up a church fair and raise that money, and we are going to pay your salary. We can't stand it another minute. We had better run in debt to the butcher and baker than to the Lord." "We," said Mrs. Solomon Black with weighty emphasis, "are going to get up a church fair and raise that money, and we are going to pay your salary. We can't stand it another minute. We had better run in debt to the butcher and baker than to the Lord." Wesley Elliot regarded her gloomily. "I never liked the idea of church fairs very well," he returned hesitatingly. "It has always seemed to me like sheer beggary." "Then," said Mrs. Solomon Black, "we will beg." Mrs. Solomon Black was a woman who had always had her way. There was not one line which denoted yielding in her large, still handsome face, set about with very elaborate water-waves which she had arranged so many years that her black hair needed scarcely any attention. It would almost seem as if Mrs. Solomon Black had been born with water waves. She spoke firmly but she smiled, as his mother might have done, at the young man, who had preached his innocent best in Brookville for months without any emolument.
