I loved stories about this zany housekeeper when I was a child. Re-reading the stories of old and reading the newer tales in this collection was like visiting an old friend—a quirky, well-intentioned, creative, somewhat clueless old friend. Unfortunately, some of the older tales did not transfer well to my children. For example, told to "dust the furniture," Amelia sprinkles it with "dusting powder" that was a sort of body powder. Do people even use body powder anymore? Certainly it is not ubiquitous, and my children did not "get it." They also did not get the instruction to "dress the chicken." The book just is not as funny when you have to stop reading, explain the joke, and then continue. A second reading found them more enthusiastic about the goof-ups. They do, after all, like to laugh at people doing silly things—and that is what Amelia Bedelia stories are all about. Flipping through this collection, children may be intrigued by the changes in illustrating over the years: Amelia's employers, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, have changed significantly in appearance, as has her cousin Alcolu. Amelia remains remarkably the same. May she never change! Young readers will be eager to get to the book's activities, which include measuring, puppet-making, kite-flying, baking, potato-stamping, and more. Meet the Author

Peggy Parish was born and grew up in Manning, South Carolina. Before moving to New York City, she taught school in the Panhandle country and in coal-mining areas. Her first job in New York City was with the Girl Scouts, and she now teaches the third grade at the Dalton School in Manhattan. Miss Parish is the author of several other books for children, including the popular Let's Be Indians.

Lynn Sweat has illustrated many Amelia Bedelia books, including Go West, Amelia Bedelia! He and his wife live in Connecticut.

Herman Parish was in the fourth grade when his aunt, Peggy Parish, wrote the first book about Amelia Bedelia. The author lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Fritz Siebel was born in Vienna and now lives in New York City with his family. He is well known for his pictures in Cat and Dog; David and the Giant; and Tell Me Some More . . . , all Harper I Can Read Books. Among the other books he has illustrated are A Fly Went By and Who Took the Farmer's Hat?
