From Part One: Story-Telling Women

The best thing you can have in life is to have someone tell you a story.
Leslie Marmon Silko

Tell me a story, dear friend. Tell me how you grew into the woman that you are. Tell me how you coped with poverty and illness and pain and grew into the strength you are to others. Tell me how you manage to be wry, witty, ironic; tell me how you keep your sense of humor. Tell me how you could care for, and then bury, husband, child, mother, father, and walk away intact.

I want to know your hopes and dreams and wishes, dear friend. Tell me how you reconcile desire with the reality of an aging body. Tell me how you blossom in self-esteem as the world ignores you. Tell me how you start over again and again, rise like a phoenix from the ashes, resurrect yourself, and go forward.

Tell me a story, dear friend. Tell me of your core self, your inner spiritual quest, your divine feminine soul that guides you onward.

Tell me how you wake each day with new perceptions, new eyes to see the stories all around you. Tell me of your curiosity, your zest for life. Tell me of your creativity. Tell me how you have learned to blend love and work, love and wisdom, love and loss, love and new beginnings.

Then tell me how you continue. Tell me how you redefine, reshape, remold, renew, restore, and regenerate yourself. Tell me what you give to others, and how you have learned to give to yourself. Tell me what you have received from others and how you are a blessing.

Share your uniqueness with me. Share your vibrancy, your quest, your wisdom. Share your deep and wide and open heart.

Tell me how you got to where you are from where you were. I, too, need guidance on the journey. Talk to me of courage and curiosity, of reconciliation and redemption. I want to know who you are. I want you to know me. For we are treasures, we mature women. We are repositories of wisdom and of strength.

Here are some of my stories, dear friend. Perhaps you'll puzzle out their meanings even as you share your own stories with me. Life stories. Life lessons. Life celebrations. This is how you live a life. We did it. You can too.
