About the Author

Barbara Sjoholm’s many books include The Pirate Queen: In Search of Grace O’Malley and Other Legendary Women of the Sea, The Palace of the Snow Queen: Winter Travels in Lapland, and Blue Windows: A Christian Science Childhood. As Barbara Wilson she published a number of mysteries, one of which won a British Crime Award and was made into the film Gaudi Afternoon. She is also a translator from Norwegian and Danish and her essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, Smithsonian, and Slate.

She was the co-founder and an owner of Seal Press for twenty-five years and also the director of the non-profit press Women in Translation, which focused on translated fiction by women.
