In recent years, swarms of books on digital photography have been published for both amateurs and professionals. Clearly intended for amateurs, this book is similar to many of the introductory guides but takes a somewhat different approach. Photographer/photojournalist Atherton and photography journalist Crabb (arts & tutorial director, What Digital Camera Online) have divided the book into four sections-an introduction, digital capture, Photoshop, and reference-devoting most of the text to digital capture, which is arranged alphabetically. In clear pose, the knowledgeable authors cover many broad topics in one or two pages well illustrated with vivid color and black-and-white images. Action, animals, people, nature, travel photography, and zoom lenses are among the topics discussed, as are those more directly related to digital photography, such as editing software, file formats, scanning, and sensors. The authors offer good tips for making photographs, and though the coverage may feel a little arbitrary, it is fairly comprehensive.
