Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Date of birth and death, political party affiliation, presidential term dates, and a fast fact accompany the name of each of the forty-four presidents. This information is connected by a bold black and gold line and placed on the timeline between 1775 and 2011. Some historically significant events are also noted to give context to the presidencies. Each fast fact provides a bit of trivia. For example, we learn James Madison was the first president to wear long pants and U. S. Grant "got a speeding ticket for riding his horse too fast." The cartoon-style used to depict each president fits well with the light tone of the fast facts. At the end of the book, there is a suggestion for the reader to build a timeline for one of the presidents. The layout is problematic. The top of page 5 gives information about the 3rd president, while the 2nd president is at the bottom of that page. The hodgepodge of single facts and different fonts results in a busy look to the pages. Sorting the information may be confusing to some readers. What is illustrated is also inconsistent. Only the presidents are depicted until the last several pages when some of the historical events/people are given their own illustrations. Occasionally, a date is presented in red with no explanation provided. Part of the "Visual Timelines in History" series, there is a glossary, an index, three titles for further reading, and information directing how to reach safe Internet sites.
