Overview

An Introduction to Human Disease, Sixth Edition is a clearly written and profusely illustrated text that takes a systems approach to presenting human disease. Specifically designed for students in the allied health and nursing fields, the text correlates structure and function disturbances, indicates how the disturbances cause the clinical manifestations of the various diseases, and discusses how these disturbances also initiate treatment. Though vastly updated, the text is still organized into two main sections: the first section covers general concepts and diseases that affect the body as a whole; the second section takes a systems approach, which details disorders typically affecting specific organ systems.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jean Smith Temple, RN, MSN (University of South Alabama College of Nursing)
Description: This is the fourth edition of this basic pathophysiology text. The book covers general concepts of organ function and disease process.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a solid foundation in knowledge of structure and function of disease. The book meets those objectives at a very basic level. This is a much-needed text for those students who need the bare basics of specific disease processes.
Audience: This book is designed for nursing and allied health students. The authors all have affiliations in clinical medicine and laboratory pathology and are thus well qualified to write in this area. In my judgment, the book is best suited to beginning-level students.
Features: Most of the illustrations presented are pertinent, but the book is perhaps underillustrated. Illustrations are in black-and-white, thus decreasing the maximum effectiveness of enhanced reading association. A color-plate atlas in the center of the book is very good. References are current and the table of contents and index are complete. The glossary covers most of the basic terms.
Assessment: This is a good book of basic structure and function in health and disease. It is well written at a basic, very understandable level. Libraries and bookstores should stock the books, and students studying basic fundamentals who need a basic knowledge of the content should consider purchase.
