This book is a must-have for beginning students of Old Norse/Old Icelandic language. Although its pedagogical approach is antiquated and confusing to the modern student, with some assistance from an instructor (preferred) or a linguistics book (possible?) it opens the doors to the world of medieval Scandinavian literature. No book is available in the U.S. that provides a better introduction to Old Norse. The text necessarily focuses on translation of various influential texts (Snorra Edda, Volsunga saga, Brennu Njals saga, etc.), and includes Hrafnkels saga in its entirety. The typeface is easily readable, and each text has line markers, for reference in the convenient glossary (containing all of the words used in the included texts) and the grammar. This text is best studied as part of a course, but the competent student in medieval languages, Germanic languages, or linguistics should be able to hack through the troublesome grammar with little difficulty (provided they take copius notes!).

many of the sagas and other writings with normalized spelling; a good, compact glossary and an excellent section on syntax/grammar/etc. this is the text i used at the university of illinois and i had to borrow an old copy of the 1st ed from the department head - ECSTATIC to see it back in print!!!!!
