Overview

Two sisters born to the same parents but treated so differently; one ended up pregnant and married at thirteen. The other didn't fare so well.

Casey and her little sister, Christine, started off with what looked like a good beginning. But looks can be deceiving. Their mother, Eve Whitney, a stunning Hollywood beauty, didn't much care for children. Unfortunately, she had two. Their father, Eddie Maxwell, was a successful songwriter and gag man; he was a brilliant, handsome, hugely charismatic man, but he had a secret drug habit that sent him careening between warm and loving parent one day, to hair-trigger monster the next.

If Casey got only sporadic moments of love and caring, Chris got nothing. Neither Eddie nor Eve ever had a kind thought for their youngest child. And so the sisters were forced to fi nd their own paths through this horrifi c excuse of a childhood.

Told without an ounce of self-pity or bitterness, this tale of a truly bizarre Hollywood life is both unique as well as universal. The scenes of pain and incredible neglect live side by side with amazing moments of humor, courage, and triumph.

A titanic memoir of grace and courage. An absolute 'must read' from Casey Clair.

This book literally takes your breath away. That Ms. Clair not only survived her bizarre and tragic childhood but emerged a whole, compassionate -- and quite funny -- human being is a testament to the boundless tenacity of the human spirit. Unbelievably inspiring. If you are raising children -- read it. If you are teaching children -- read it. If you are just someone in search of an uplifting miracle of a story -- read it. It will warm your heart to the core.

    My absolute favorite new book

"My favorite new book. Not since Glass Castles has a book hit me like this one. I went to the bath tub with it at 9:30 and finished at 1:30am. I laughed and cried and reread several chapters. I JUST LOVED IT. To grow up in spite of one's childhood is always an epic event. I could not recommend this book more and I'm not even related to the author."

    Stunning, AND funny!

This is a survivor's story, written with clarity & humor, at once appalling & uplifting. I couldn't put it down - partly the fascination of looking at an horrific accident - but mostly due to the fascinating & funny experiences the author shares of her life as 1 of 2 little girls trying to survive nearly complete lack of parenting by 2 world-class narcissist Hollywood players. Not one to wallow in self-pity, the author tells her truths in a life-affirming way; she builds a remarkable world (eventually) for herself out of little but her determination, intellect, & indomitable spirit!

"An Only Child and Her Sister" is an amazing story, all the better because it's true; a cautionary tale about the effects of parental neglect, a hopeful tale of the redemptive powers of love -- it knocked me out!

NOT YOUR POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL STORY

This true-life story has it all, humor, tragedy, conflict, resolve. a candid glimpse into a life on the edge of Hollywood, not of its stars but one family on the periphery of the entertainment industry.
