Publishers Weekly
Beverley's 11th Malloren World romance, which starts a new trilogy, is a delightful, deftly plotted exploration of social class, gender roles, and romance. Prudence Youlgrave's expectations are reasonable for an impoverished woman in 1765 Yorkshire: she hopes to improve her station by marrying well. When roguish Catesby Burgoyne rescues her from robbers and persuades her to marry him, both are shocked by their impulsiveness and then stunned when Cate's older brother's death makes him the implausible earl of Malzard and Prudence an improbable countess. Prudence and Cate's path to love is rife with obstacles and charming secondary characters such as the formidable Lady Arradale. Though the final confrontation with Prudence's former fiancé is disappointingly anticlimactic, the romance is otherwise charming and refreshingly restrained. (Mar.)

Loved the beginning and couldn't wait to see their happily ever after. But then it just ends. Nothing gets wrapped up. It's only the "promise" of revenge and the "promise" of their first night together. Jo you needed to write 20 more pages with a lovely epilogue. It would of then gotten 5 stars from me. Instead I give it a 2.

In 1765 in Yorkshire, Prudence Youlgrave lives in poverty. She knows her only hope to escape is to marry wealth above her social level. However, meeting someone with money is difficult for someone in her economic straits. Catesby Burgoyne rescues Prudence from robbers. Shocking himself though he knows his intoxicated state keeps him from remaining logical, he asks her to marry him; shocking herself she accepts. When sober he regrets his fight with his brother the Earl of Malzrad and not because he has no money being cut off. Resigning from the military, he and Prudence are further shocked with what fate spins next. Cate's older brother dies unexpectedly, which makes the remorseful spare an Earl and his wife Prudence the Countess. As they fall in love, her former fiancé arrives to stake a prior claim on Prudence. The class distinctions come across very powerfully in this super Georgian romance as the support cast of aristocrats could make or break the new Countess. Although the ending with Prudence's ratty fiancé seems unnecessary and a bit weak, this fast-paced tale will thrill fans of Jo Beverly's Malloren saga as the engaging historical romance contains combat on two fronts: gender and class warfare. I don't think this book was worth $7.99. It was a sweet story and I liked the main characters but for only 308 pages and an almost completely chaste story, it's too much money.

The unlikely couple seemed to be tossed together by fate. This book showed upsides and downsides of a marriage between two people with different social status. I couldn't put it down; I read it the very day I got it.

I thought the book was good, but the ending dissappointed me greatly. If she had just written 10-15 more pages to finish things up I would have no complaints. I give it a 3.5 stars as it is now.
