The Long-Awaited Prequel to the RED RIVER OF THE NORTH Series

Twenty-year-old Ingeborg Strand is certain she is destined to be an old maid. She's had several suitors but none she deemed worthy of spending her life with. That is, until she meets a university student from Oslo, and feelings stronger than friendship begin to develop between them. But tragedy strikes, and the future begins to look bleaker than ever.

Grief settles heavily over Ingeborg, and her mother suggests that she leave Norway and start afresh in America, as so many others have done before her. But how will she accomplish that with little money and no one to accompany her?

It isn't long before she meets Roald Bjorklund, a widower who has been planning to go to America for some time, lured by the promise of free land. He's a good man, a hard-working man--and he has a young son who desperately needs a mother. He's clearly interested in Ingeborg, but is he the answer to her prayers? And what about love? This isn't how she's always imagined it.

Ingeborg Strand has a heartrending decision to make...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
08/26/2013
Those readers who want to know even more about the Bjorklund family, whose multigenerational saga has unspooled in four series by Snelling, have their wish fulfilled in this prequel to the Red River of the North series, which introduces the characters Ingeborg Strand and Roald Bjorklund in their native land of Norway. Ingeborg, her siblings, and cousins are off to their summer farm, where she can escape the critical eye of her mor (mother). A parallel story line involves Oslo student Nils Aarvidson, who’s reluctant to accept the duties that go with being heir to the family business and fortune. An accident throws Ingeborg and Nils together in the country, and their feelings for one another grow and considerably complicate prospects. Ingeborg’s future becomes even less clear when later she meets the widower Roald Bjorklund and his young son Thorliff. The novel moves slowly at times, providing details of life on the Norwegian summer farm that may try the patience of readers more interested in romance. It’s a challenge to keep straight the identities of the little Strand siblings and cousins. Still, the Bjorklund family backstory will certainly please fans of the series, who are numerous. I am a big fan of Lauraine Snelling and all of her Blessing Series, I have read all of the books in the series.  An Untamed Heart was slow to start, but then picked up in its storyline.  The book spent time getting to know Ingeborg Strand's family, and how this was the foundation of who she was before the Blessing series.  The story tells how she learned to make their famous cheese and her interest in the medical field helping others, especially with becoming a midwife.  Any fan of the Blessing series will enjoy this book.

Ingeborg's story begins here, loved it

Ingeborg Strand loves the summer when several members of her family spend time at the Strand seter. It is a very busy time for them but they have a lot of fun and the best part is being away from her mother. Ingeborg loves her mother but she is constantly being criticized and feels like her mother doesn't like her. It is so peaceful at the seter, except this year. When a stranger, Nils Aarvidson, is found almost dead by the river, Ingeborg being the oldest has to figure out a way to get him up the hill and to their cabin so she can try to save him. She doesn't plan on falling in love and when he returns to his family in Oslo, Nowray she feels in her heart that she'll never hear or see him again. Then she receives a couple of letters from Nils saying he's coming to visit after Christmas, he hasn't forgotten her after all.

I have read all of Lauraine's books, and there are many, about Ingeborg Bojorklund living in the Dakota Territory as well as two of her other series, I love her books. I enthusiastically picked up this book to read and was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed finding out about Ingeborg's life as a younger woman, how she learned to be such a strong woman and why she would go into her deep dark places in her mind. There will be three more books in this new series and, yes, I'm already anxious for them to be published so I can read them. I don't know any of the titles yet but will be watching for them.

If you have not read any of Lauraine's books I do encourage you to read them. I would not pass any of them up. Thank you Lauraine Snelling
