Children's Literature - Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Ana and Adam enjoy hanging out in their secret clubhouse. They are working on acrostic poems at school and find Adam's mom's old journal that includes acrostic poems she wrote about Adam's dad and uncle. It gives them an idea to write acrostic poems about their own siblings. However, they realize that it's difficult to come up with the exact words they want to use in the very beginning. They begin by brainstorming, or free writing, everything they can think of about their topic. This gives them something to work with. Once they have lots of ideas, they can choose just the right words from the list to match with each letter. They each write an acrostic poem. The back matter of the book includes ways to write your own acrostic poem and addresses the issues of process, explaining to the reader that it's best to get ideas down before worrying about form. Also included are a short glossary of poetic terms introduced in the book, recent books with acrostic poems, and websites of interest. It is part of the "Poetry Builders" book series. This book would make a good companion book to use with collections of acrostic poems. Recommended for the upper elementary classroom. Reviewer: Marcie Flinchum Atkins
