Children's LiteratureIn her many books for Gareth Stevens' "Imagination Library" series, Weber finds interesting details of anatomy and behavior to distinguish the featured snake from all others. Although not the longest snake, the anaconda is the heaviest and thickest, and thus is considered the world's biggest snake. Too heavy to live in trees, this threatened species hunts primarily near rivers and lakes, dragging its prey underwater. The anaconda has space in its thick body for two lungs, allowing it to remain submerged up to thirty minutes. Unlike other constrictors such as the python, the anaconda is bad-tempered and does not adapt well to life in captivity. All books in the series include a chapter on threats to the species from loss of habitat and human predation. The final pages contain a glossary, index, and list of related books and web sites. Intriguing photographs enhance the accessible prose in this useful series. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 7 to 10.
