About the Author

Dr. Hassanein brings over 16 years of research experience and business development in bioenergy, biosolids research, bioprocessing, and sustainability. He has a strong record in funding and proposal management, securing over $15 million in funding.

His research expertise lies in environmental biotechnology, applying engineering principles to maximize renewable energy production and address challenges in biosolids and wastewater treatment. This includes work in microbial fuel cells (MFC), microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), anaerobic digestion (AD), fast pyrolysis, gasification, and nanotechnology applications in waste management. Dr. Hassanein has also focused on life cycle assessments of bioenergy and nutrient transformations.

In the last 5 years, Dr. Hassanein has been awarded 9 grants, as a PI or Co-PI, totaling $15 million from prestigious organizations such as the US Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Maryland state departments. He has been involved in high-impact projects such as "Innovative Bioplastic Production with Microbial Electrochemical Technology (MET)" and "Systematic Characterization of Variability in MSW Streams for Fuel Production". He is a recognized scientist, having been invited to over 20 TV interviews and presenting his research at numerous top conferences more than 60 times. Dr. Hassanein's work on "Using Electrochemical Systems for Waste Treatment and Energy Production" was awarded at the 2023 BBIORESTEC conference in Italy.
