Editorial Reviews
Patricia Gramling-Babb
This second edition reference book is written in encyclopedic form to outline the principles and the multiple components involved in the practice of anesthesia. The authors' intention is to provide reference material to those anesthesia and intensive care professionals preparing for certification exams. The intended audience is physicians in the field of anesthesia and critical care. With this second edition the authors also desire to extend the text to ICU and operating room nurses. I found the content of the reference material excellent. Of concern for U.S. trained physicians is the difference in U.K. and U.S. terminology. This may make it difficult to find the desired subject matter. For example, I attempted to look up post-operative seizures but located the information under convulsions. In addition, a number of medications discussed are not used in the U.S. and the spelling of others is different. This makes a small percentage of the pharmacology data either difficult to find or useless to the U.S. reader. I found a significant number of important and relevant diagrams in the book which were appropriately labeled. I have not had the opportunity to utilize this type of anesthesia reference text during my career. This unique text is an extremely useful and practical adjunct to the formal anesthesiology textbooks. Unlike subject or content oriented texts, with this book readers can rapidly access very specific information. The authors did cite references when indicated. This not only authenticates the data but also allows the reader to access additional information. I would like to suggest using color in several of the diagrams in the book such as dermatome mapping of the spinalnerves, division of the brachial plexus, etc. Since this text is intended to be used as an exam review, such devices aid in the learning process. Although the authors have outlined a great deal of information, this is not a sole text for an exam review. From The Critics

Three British consultants in the specialties update their 1993 reference for trainers and trainees in surgical, medical, anesthetic, operating theater, or nursing contexts. They cover both basic sciences and clinical practice, cross-reference extensively rather than index, illustrate the articles with drawings and tables, identify people, and once in a while include a bibliographic reference or two. They provide information on pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, physics, statistics, equipment, history, and other aspects. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)From the Publisher
An incredible amount of information is to be found in detailed but concise entries intelligently arranged and cross-referenced. It is an easy-to-use, fast reference text of value to FRCA students, their tutors, jobbing anaesthetists and their assistants.Anaesthesia
There was not much room for improvement from the previous editions of this book, but this has been achieved. Not only aesthetically … but also with the content update and clearer illustrations. We would recommend this book to all anaesthetists in training.
British Journal of Anaesthesia
An invaluable text for those at any stage of training and to those who wish to use it as a ready reference text...an essential addition to any anaesthetic department for both anaesthetists and intensive care practitioners.
