Overview

Funky, pulsating electronic beats breeze though producer-musician David Holmes's score for Analyze That, the sequel to Harold Ramis's box-office smash Analyze This -- with Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal reprising their roles as a troubled mobster and his nervous psychoanalyst, respectively. Holmes is known both for his solo releases, such as laid-back jazz-funk of Let's Get Killed, and for his savvy scores for the Steven Soderbergh films Out of Sight and the charming remake of Ocean's Eleven. Highlights of Holmes's energetic Analyze That score include the Shaft-like opening credit motif (later reprised as "The Chase"), the meticulously mellow, piano-based jazz tune "Restaurant Background," and the electric guitar burn of a too-brief "Bedroom" fragment. Better still are the composer's ominous, evocative themes underscoring robbery scenes: the wah-wah and piano-bass boogie of "Getting the Gold" and its frenetic companion piece, "The Heist." With its fun mix of contemporary electronica and retro-cool funkiness, the final analysis on Holmes's latest score is one of resounding success.
