Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The Newbery Medalist's irrepressible heroine is in top form as, deciding she's ready for romance, she answers a personals ad--with typically hilarious results. Ages 9-12. (Aug.)
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
At 13, Anastasia longs for a bit of romance in her life. What can be safer than corresponding secretly with an older man, 28, whose interests are similar to yours? It can lead to complications when you send him an old photo of your mom. There are plenty of laughs. To hide her own identity, she signs herself as SWIFTY, an acronym whose meaning changes with each letter. Her letter to SWM, (single, white, male) are priceless. 1992 (orig.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-- Look out world--Anastasia is a teenager! At 13, she has renounced boys, but not men. Using a code name, SWIFTY, Anastasia has answered a personals ad in the New York Review of Books . Her correspondence frames the story, which also involves her participation as a junior bridesmaid in a wedding. It is Sam, Anastasia's three-year-old brother, who is responsible for the wedding finale that hinges on a word play. The warmth and humor readers have come to expect are present in ample measure here. New fans of Anastasia, who question Sam's precociousness, can be happily referred to All About Sam (Houghton, 1988). As for Anastasia, the long hand of coincidence brings her correspondence to a timely end. --Amy Kellman, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
From the Publisher

"Anastasia herself is at her best here: headstrong, inventive, endearing, and irrepressible, though not above learning from her mistakes." Publishers Weekly

A good and funny book, but needs to be more realistic!

I liked this book, it was very funny and interesting, but one thing. Anastasia is too naive and Sam is too smart! I'm an eleven year old and I know. In this book, Anastasia acts exactly the same as she did when she was ten in her first book. She also seems to still have the same intelligence, too. I am much smarter than her, and so is the dumbest kid in my class. Also, Sam is too smart! He is two or three in that book, and he has a complete vocabulary. Though there are many three year olds who can talk just as well, if Anastasia is very dumb and Sam is very smart, it just doesn't work out. But aside from that, this is a great book!
