School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-- Four books about historical occurrences around which some events remain unexplained and undocumented. Each of the volumes has the same format. Chapters are broken down into subheadings that emphasize major points. Pages have wide margins where quotes from related works or individuals are often inserted. Occasionally these quotes are unrelated to what is being discussed on that page. Black-and-white photographs and a few illustrations and maps are included. Although their quality is not remarkable, they do usually enhance and clarify the text. The maps are particularly helpful. While the information about these mysteries may be available elsewhere, the depth of exploration into these subjects is unusual. The Discovery of America discusses the evidence that Christopher Columbus was not the first to find the New World and includes the Viking exploration as well as Irish, Welsh, and African legends that claim voyages to what is now North America. Amelia Earhart gives a similar account to Lauber's in Lost Star (Scholastic, 1988), but is more detailed in the theories about Earhart's disappearance. Although somewhat repetitious, the text in Anastasia is involving, and does introduce a segment of Russian history. Waggoner gives some possibilities of conspiracies and the involvement of organized crime in the The Assassination of President Kennedy . These books raise questions and suggest a number of answers to these mysteries. Each one states that the definite answers may never be found. Interesting, intriguing reading for nonfiction mystery enthusiasts, report writers, and debaters. --Marilyn Long Graham, Jacksonville Public Libraries, FL
