As a pianist and composer, Fort supplies memorable lines that rely on a moody lyricism for their considerable power. She certainly has found support players who share her subtle vision. Clarinetist Perry Robinson is much admired by aficionados who have followed his adventurous work since the early 1960s, while drummer Paul Motian is a certified legend, a relentlessly inventive percussionist whose greatest strength may be his extraordinary ability to truly listen to his compatriots and respond accordingly. Bassist Ed Schuller, son of the famed musicologist Gunther Schuller, also molds his striking talents to Fort’s musical universe with impressive results. As formidable as her teammates may be, the ultimate credit for the success of A Long Story lies with its gifted leader. Fort’s music may not come on loud and hard, but its considerable rewards are stealthily satisfying.
