THE ANATOMY OF HUMAN DESTRUCTIVENESS is an absolutely riveting explanation of the human mind. It should be mandated reading in every classroom in the world. Fromm gives complete and thorough anthropological & biological analyses in the beginning of his monumental work. Then he carefully and thoroughly dissects each type of destructive motivations which cause humans to harm each other. His analyses range from minor harm to the absolutely horrific (i.e. the Holocaust). I was particularly interested in his explanations of how easily manipulated entire populations of people are. Everything Fromm wrote was thoroughly researched and completely documented in this book.

I first read Fromm in 1966 while in grad school. I picked up his copy of Anatomy of Human Destructiveness and was captivated by his perception into the minds of those who can destroy and corrupt others and civilizations. His references to man and his shallow and hollow abyss, man's ability to transfer his own evil thoughts, actions and justifications into a real world event and man's subtle but effective means to destroy others slowly and methodically holds a very frigthening meaning today. I am re-reading it and will ask my committee members and fellow partners to read this book. I highly recommend it for those who want to know more about why we, as man and woman, replace spirit, love and compassion with evil and unrully justifiable acts. Rationalization takes a whole new meaning here... a must read and re-read...
