Overview

This accurate and up-to-date introductory text on human form and function presents a large, complex body of scientific knowledge in an easily understood, conversational writing style. Focusing on concepts rather than just descriptions to help students unify information, the text uses a "big picture" theme of body function and explains the body's homeostatic regulation. Many practical features and hundreds of full-color illustrations enhance text content, and critical thinking learning opportunities are integrated throughout. New illustrations, revised Career Choices boxes in each unit, and current topics — including anthrax and the human genome project — have been added to this edition.

• Chapter outlines and key terms lists at the beginning of each chapter give students a short overview of content.
• An easily understood, conversational writing style facilitates student learning.
• Consistent use of unifying themes such as the Big Picture and Cycle of Life sections help students comprehend the interrelation of body systems and how the structure and function change in relation to age and development.
• An inviting full-color design includes more than 1300 photos and illustrations to simplify difficult concepts.
• Enhances student learning with dozens of unique full-color micrographs of cellular structure.
• Includes a variety of specialty boxes and tables to explain the practical applications of the principles of A&P.
• Quick Check review questions after major sections of content reinforce learning.
• Case studies challenge students with "real-life" clinical situations.
• The Panorama of Anatomy and Physiology CD-ROM included with the text provides information, interactive exercises, quizzes, and humor as it teaches content.
• Detailed chapter summaries at the end of each chapter outline essential information to help organize study time.
• Content review questions for every chapter help students determine how well they have mastered concepts.
• Color-coded tabs along the side of each page differentiate the 6 units at a glance.
• A mini-atlas of regional dissection of human anatomy can be used as a study guide by students unable to participate in a cadaver dissection laboratory.

Incl. basic instruction on cell anatomy/muscles/glands/etc.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Loretta L. White , DNS (Indiana State University)
Description: This is a comprehensive introduction to human anatomy and physiology. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The authors state the purpose of this edition is to provide an updated presentation of the subject in a clear, concise manner that helps students unify a vast amount of complex information. Understanding in the sciences has expanded enormously in recent years so that new material published in the literature is quickly outdated. The goal of keeping students and teachers abreast of these new developments is certainly a worthwhile goal and admirably met by the authors of this book.
Audience: The intended audience is students who need the basics of human anatomy and physiology. The book would most certainly be useful for any college student preparing for a health-related career. Both authors have many years of experience teaching this subject and have published extensively.
Features: All body systems are explained, as well as related concepts such as stress, nutrition, and genetics. The beautiful photographs and clear illustrations throughout help to make sometimes very complicated material understandable for the student. The many tables succinctly summarize large amounts of information. Particularly appealing are the transparencies that depict the human body in overlays that take the student from superficial to internal structures. Learning aids are abundant and include case studies, chapter summaries, information boxes, and vocabulary lists along with a brief guide to medical terminology that serves as a supplement to the text. Superb anatomical images are found in the accompanying atlas. In addition, the authors have prepared an online course based on this edition.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent foundational textbook for the student and teacher of human anatomy and physiology. It is apparent that the authors went to great lengths to make this subject understandable and accessible to learners. Along with the two anatomy and physiology texts I keep on my bookshelf (Shier et al., Hole's Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 9th edition (McGraw-Hill, 2006) and Seeley et al., Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 6th edition (McGraw-Hill, 2007)), this one will be a welcome addition.
