Meet the Author

Dr. Elizabeth "Betsy" Tower and her husband, John, both doctors looking for a challenge, moved to Alaska in the 1950's. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Tower graduated from Vassar in 1947, received her doctorate of medicine, from Case Western Reserve in 1951 and a master's degree in public health from the University of Washington in 1984. She worked for more than 20 years with the Alaska Division of Health. After retiring in 1986, Dr. Tower pursued her love of history. She was named Alaska's Historian of the Year in 1996 for Icebound Empire, a history of the founders of the Kennicott Copper Co. She also has written biographies of Sheldon Jackson, Austin E. "Cap" Lathrop, and Steven Birch; a guide to skiing in Alaska, and several prize-winning articles for Alaska History magazine. Dr. Tower intends to donate royalties from this book to the Cook Inlet Historical Society, of which she is a member, for use in helping develop the Alaska Gallery at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.
