Distribution of water follows the concept of repartimiento de agua (equal distribution of water), which is based on the Moorish notion of equidad that comes from the Qur’an, referring to the fact that regardless of the amount of water in the river, water is equally dispersed according to the amount of land under cultivation. Essentially, the water in each acequia is divided by the number of acres requiring irrigation. In drought years, however, people receive a paper note telling them when they can have the water and for how long, to ensure conservation of this precious resource.
