Having read some 30 books on Chinese history and art before taking a trip to China this summer, I find Scarpari's book absolutely the single best book for an understanding of ancient China. The illustrations are absolutely remarkable. To say that they enhance the text is a gross understatement.
What a fantastic book! Some of the best pictures of the ancient Chinese life that I've seen in a compilation, and it puts to rest any lingering questions about how the articles fit into Chinese culture. One of the best of the best.
