No civilization on earth has a longer lifespan than that of China. Stretching back thousands of years, Chinese culture encompasses so many critical leaders, happenings, revolutions, and social evolutions that modern states with a more limited lifespan almost pale. In Ancient China author Tony Wood chronicles a tiny portion of that heritage. Like other books in the "Cultural Atlas for Young People" series, Ancient China bifurcates its subject. Part one of the text focuses primarily upon historical events, movements, and individuals. The second half of the book handles cultural features that have both shaped and been shaped by Chinese history. Combined with lush illustrations, this written approach produces a workmanlike overview of the vast subject that Chinese history is. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
