At the end of the first chapter readers are presented with three story paths. The story paths divide the era into even more specific time periods. For example, you may choose to fight battles as a knight in the 1100s, explore life in a royal castle in the 1200s, or experience the terror of the Black Plague in the 1300s. Each story path immerses the reader in the time period and provides a variety of choices to make that personalize the experience. At the end of each path you may choose to return to follow another path or read the conclusion. The final chapter provides a concise overview of the era. The books are aesthetically pleasing with lightly tinted pages and a variety of interesting photos throughout. Struggling and reluctant middle grade readers will be drawn into the “Choose Your Own Adventure”- style series, but with multiple shorter scenarios. When one path is finished, the reader can choose to go back and read the other for another adventure. Ancient Egypt opens up with “About Your Adventure,” which helps to establish what the reader is about to experience, events that actually happened to real people. Readers can travel to Giza and join the pyramid builders in 2550 BCE or maybe join Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony, or the battle of the Roman dictator Octavian in 31 BCE and more. They learn how the stones for the pyramids were chiseled and transported, or how the mummy tombs were painted and the bodies embalmed, or how Cleopatra and Mark Antony fought the Romans and ultimately killed themselves. The second-person view point allows the reader to feel like he or she is in the story. Sometimes the choices made lead to a happy life and other times they lead to death. Reading more than one adventure in a sitting may be confusing to some children. Teachers may enjoy using this book as a read-aloud, or assigning different adventures to groups of students.
