This is indeed a very short introduction. Ian Shaw expertly and clearly packs a mass of information about ancient Egypt, Egyptology and the Egyptian legacy into a little paperback that would fit into your pocket. Small it might be, but it definitely provides food for thought. Thematic sections discuss the evidence for, and the significance of, hieroglyphs, kingship, ethnic identity, funerary rituals and religion while other sections examine the reconstruction of ancient Egypt in historiography since the Greek period, the sources and the reinvention of Egyptian images.
