Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Hunefer is a nine-year-old girl who lives in Thebes, a city on the Nile River in Egypt. It is through her eyes that we catch a glimpse of this country. The illustrations are of photographic quality, showing many aspects of Hunefer's everyday life, as she would demonstrate it for a class project. Readers will learn about trading in the market, clothing and the food Hunefer's people eat. Throughout her tale, Hunefer shows the reader how to make many of the objects that she introduces. Instructions are given for making a necklace, spinning top and sistrum, or musical rattle. Readers are also introduced to hieroglyphs. This series, "My World" is an excellent introduction to ancient civilizations for the early grades.
