Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The ancient Egyptians settled in the fertile region along the Nile River over 7,000 years ago. They build many huge monuments and created many beautiful artifacts, many of them painted. Most of the best artists and sculptors worked in the service of the king. Egyptian paintings have been found in a tomb that is over 5,000 years old. Their paintings were highly stylized, making them very recognizable. As early as 2700 B.C., potters were using wheels to make clay vessels. They decorated their ceramics with faience, a mixture of crushed sand with lime and ash. This brilliant blue resembles turquoise. There were a wealth of minerals and metals in the desert surrounding their land, and the Egyptians used these materials to create ornate jewelry. They developed a system of writing about 3250 B.C. They wrote on clay, stone and papyrus. Four craft activities mimic the arts of the Egyptians. A scarab seal is made out of clay. A temple wall painting is created on cardboard. An amulet is made out of clay. A mummy case is made with paper mache and painted. There is a disjointed flow to the text that seems to jump from art form to art form. The illustrations are informative, but not inspiring.
