Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This detailed and functional reference book for young readers eager to learn about the culture of Ancient Egypt is an excellent addition to any home or school library. The photographs of Ancient Egyptian relics such as sculptures, paintings, carvings, jewelry and tools, accompanied by detailed explanations, comprise crucial elements of the book. Many facets of Egyptian life are vividly represented including, but not limited to, religion, daily life, craftsmanship, the role of war, temple worship, tombs, and mummification. The four transparent pages on the Royal Mummy, Life on the Nile, Temple Secrets, and the Royal Tomb help readers to visually explore the intricacies of these artifacts. Readers will be able to see the outside of King Tutankhamen's coffin, and with the turn of the transparent page, see his mummified remains. The modern pictures of Egypt depict the passage of time, enabling readers to understand the historical context. The table of contents and index also promote easy navigation through the many subjects. 2002, DK Publishing, Ages 9 to 12.

Gr 2-5-A dazzling look at Egyptian artifacts and architecture. Hundreds of excellent-quality, captioned, full-color photographs and reproductions demonstrate various aspects of culture and life. Two-page spreads focus on different facets of this ancient civilization, and transparent cutaways are used to view Tutankhamen's mummy, the interior of his tomb, the temple at Abu Simbel, and the hold of a cargo boat on the Nile. This spectacular presentation is easy to read and a delight to browse through. However, it is not substantial enough for reports, and lacks a time line or a cohesive historical overview. It's similar in concept and format to the "Eyewitness" series (DK), but even glitzier.-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, OR Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
