Library Journal - Library JournalAn architecture enthusiast and a well-known English photographer of British homes who has produced several books on the old homes and architecture of England, Sykes has put together a collection of out-of-the-way castles, halls, and manors from England's countryside. He presents a very enjoyable glimpse into the past, offering not only lovely color photographs of interiors and exteriors but local and family histories and insight into how the lifestyle and political history of the day influenced certain aspects of the architecture. It would be enjoyable to have this book while traveling through the countryside ferreting out historical treasures. Recommended for larger libraries that maintain an extensive collection on England.-- Barbara Bartos, St. Croix Cty. Lib., Hammond, Wis.
