Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
The Corinthian columns of the Supreme Court, the Hippocratic oath in the medical profession, the runaway popularity of the "Percy Jackson" series, the Olympics, and words, words, words—the Greeks, it seems, are everywhere in our world today! In Steele's comprehensive look at ancient Greece, he offers young readers insight into the origins of all things Greek. Two page spreads cover Minoan civilization, the rise of the Mycenaean, war with Troy, the establishment of city-states, and the spread of the Hellenistic empire in a somewhat chronological order. Digital illustrations merge with historical artifacts, maps, works of art, and photographs to create a visual feast. Fun facts, informational captions, and word definitions are seamlessly woven into each layout, offering another layer for the information-seeker. Additional chapters cover everything from food to fashion and mythology to math. The complexity of Greek history does make for some challenging transitions in the attempt to summarize ideas in kid-friendly terms, and at times readers may feel a little lost from chapter to chapter. However, the breadth of Greek influence clearly comes through as the author introduces readers to ideas in culture, art, history, philosophy, architecture, and politics that find their roots in ancient Greece. This volume would serve as a valuable resource for both lovers of The Lightning Thief and the history-lover. Reviewer: Leah Hanson
