Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Aimed primarily at middle grade readers, the book opens with discussion about nineteenth century archeological findings related to India's Harappan civilization. The author places those sites in the context of the many civilizations whose impact can still be felt in the present-day subcontinent. Subsequent chapters offer an overview of these many empires and systems of government, as well as their legacy in the modern world. Other material covered includes the varied geography of the region, classes and lifestyles, religious architecture and art, the path to independence, and present-day India. Sidebars add relevant information on a range of subjects such as yoga, chess, the ancient Indian number system that is the precursor to our own, the ancient sanitation system of the Indus Valley, and more. The text is clear and direct, and the information well-researched. Color photographs provide further context, as does a map of ancient India superimposed on today's political boundaries. Brief biographies address the impact of key historical figures. Other backmatter includes a timeline, a comprehensive glossary, a brief reading list, the URL for the publisher's web site offering additional facts, and an index. This title is part of "The Ancient World" series; other titles include Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mesopotamia, and Ancient Greece. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
