Condition: Good
Ex-library copy with expected stickers and stamps. Solid bump to top cover corner. Pages are clean and unmarked. Bindery flaw to back end paper and back free end paper - corners ... are folded back and glued to inside back cover. Doesn't affect usability at all. Cover surface has some scuffs and flaws, mostly on back, but still is glossy and looks quite good. Binding firm and square. Beautifully-produced book with color photographs throughout. Overview

In an area known as Mesopotamia, three ancient civilizations thrived. The Sumerians formed the first cities and developed the first system of written language. The Babylonians created rules of law, the most famous of which is the Code of Hammurabi. The Assyrians showed their military strength through conquest and established the first cavalry units, or soldiers fighting on horseback. This book explores the cultures of ancient Mesopotamia through their social structure. It takes a look at the people and details the duties of a king, the activities of a peasant farmer, and much more. It also describes some of the discoveries and writings that have led to our present-day understanding of this fascinating civilization.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a well-written, colorfully illustrated title in Scholastic's "People of the Ancient World" series of reference books for middle-grade students. It opens with a brief but clear historical overview of the significance of the "land between the rivers," the area where archeologists have long felt Western civilization began. By using the various classes and professions of the ancient Mesapotamians to organize her chapters, the author has created an interesting, absorbing picture of the ancient cultures of the Middle East. The intricately-detailed artwork of the period is used to illustrate many of the chapters; for instance, students can not only read about the caravans traversing the ancient deserts, but can see exactly what the people and animals in these caravans looked like to an ancient Assyrian sculptor. A final chapter discusses the area's continuing historical impact, concluding with a four-thousand-year-old lament over the destruction of Sumerian artifacts which the author relates to the recent losses at the National Museum in Baghdad. A timeline, biographical dictionary, glossary and bibliography are included at the back of the book. 2004, Scholastic/Franklin Watts, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-These well-written, attractive titles have extensive collections of quality color photographs of ruins and artifacts. There are illustrated time lines and biographical dictionary sections as well as lists of additional resources including videos, and some useful and intriguing online sites. The first title covers the early origins and culture of the Inca people; daily life and agricultural methods of highland farmers; childhood; lifestyles of emperors, the nobility, and the warrior classes; religion; building techniques; and the Spanish conquest and after. Mesopotamia explores Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian cultures; their social strata; and the lifestyles of farmers, rulers, nobles, priests, merchants, artists, and the military in these societies. These titles rise above most on the topic and are right on target for the intended audience.-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, OR Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
