Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed.
Books in the "Unexplained" series present fascinating topics to challenge readers to follow their own intriguing explorations. It could be that further insights will be discovered that add to the body of diverse knowledge and clarify facts from laudable speculation. All of the sections in the book include a "Mystery File" format with barebones facts as to whether aspects or examples have been solved or are still obscure. Questions still remain about King Arthur, Stonehenge, the Clovis people, ancient sacred writings, the Minoans, Atlantis, the golden city of Eldorado, Easter Island stone monuments, Lyonesse (the "City of Lions"), the pyramids of Egypt, the legend of Troy, and the Seven Pagodas. "What Happened Next?" and "Facts and Theories" passages present additional information related to the core paranormal activity or phenomenon as an integral part of the series' realistic evaluation approach. Separating verifiable history from legend, myth, folklore, and cultural traditions requires expertise, but also sensitivity to newer methods available with changing technologies. By blending cumulative data and unearthed artifacts in fresh ways, experts compose a stronger foundation of evidence to substantiate knowledge and develop brand new theories. Books bring these to the forefront quite readily and invite readers to conduct more targeted research. Text boxes list a few summary questions for readers to think about, and answers are given on glossary pages. Vivid photographs, archival material, and labeled diagrams with brief descriptions give pivotal context for time periods, locations, figures, and events. A nice index and a list of website resources add to every book. Understanding mysterious concepts, events, and phenomena can be addressed by specific connections across the ancient world through the "Unexplained" series. Other books in the series: Disappearances, Ghosts and Spirits, and Strange Animals. Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed.
