Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed.
Great civilizations are richly examined in books of the "The Ancient World" series to provide youngsters with substantial resources such as a basic timeline, multiple artifacts, scenic photographs, and archival prints. Historical Roman aspects are prominently featured while relevance to modern times is discussed as well, but also for the Incas, Mayans, and Chinese. The series makes appropriate connections to daily life in a "The Past Is Present" section with full page spreads with contrasting text and visuals. Students trace key elements about Roman ingenuity and innovation by direct application to today's current activities. For instance, legal systems, technological advances, and the English language are prominent vestiges incorporated around the world for generations. Pages in the series have significant words about ancient Rome in bold. They are also listed in the margins with a brief dictionary entry for readers to follow pertinent information and historical references with greater clarity. Engaging chapters portray Rome as the birthplace of western civilization and follow its development from myth to an empire. Characteristics of Ancient Rome are described such as developing institutions, a powerful civilization chosen by the gods with strong traditions, and extending influences with distinguished memorials. In addition, books in the series contain mini-biographies of famous rulers, a solid glossary, thorough index, and brief bibliography. Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed.
