Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - K. Meghan Robertson
Part of the "Navigators" series, this look into Ancient Rome provides an extremely vivid look at a variety of topics ranging from basic history and rulers to a look at life in the city versus the country, a dinner banquet, fashion, war, and entertainment. "Chapters" are really just a two-page spread completely packed with bright colors and interesting facts. Text for the main information is large but there is also plenty of smaller text for captions, quotations, etc. Labels on the astounding illustrations give a great idea of how things worked and the way the Romans lived. The potential downfall of this book is that the pages are very busy; however, the layouts are relatively consistent—each spread includes a defined term on the far left, several inset boxes or pictures with captions, a fact highlighted at the bottom, and a website for further research on the far right (all of which were active at the book's 2009 publication). Authentic quotations from famous Roman authors are a bonus, as are sporadic Latin terms, though there could be more of both of these features. Reviewer: K. Meghan Robertson
