Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Christina Fairman
This slim nine-volume set introduces readers to vampire and werewolf legends from around the world. The series includes historical accounts, modern takes, tales from other cultures, and even how to recognize and defend oneself. Illustrations are predictably gruesome and bloody. The artwork features numerous benign monochromatic drawings that have been splattered with red paint, accompanied by additional illustrations that range from silly to creepy. The weakest of the group is Ancient Werewolves & Vampires: The Roots of the Teeth. This book demands proper editing—in one case, for example, the word "tale" is mistakenly used instead of "tail," while on another page Hinduism is referred to as "the world's oldest living religions." The simplistic vocabulary and low reading level will disappoint most tween and teen readers. Especially problematic, however, is the fact that the bibliography almost entirely consists of popular Web sites, a choice that reflects a decidedly amateur approach to research. Ancient vampire and werewolf legends deserve a more nuanced and sophisticated treatment than what one finds here. (The Making of a Monster: Vampires and Werewolves) Reviewer: Christina Fairman
Children's Literature - Naomi Butler
This book is about the bloodthirsty gods bent on destruction all through history. It is probably one of the best books despite the size of the volume. It appears to cover all kinds of monster, creatures, and spirits. There are many illustrations — some familiar and some are not. The teeth and boring into flesh is the focus of the information and the pictures. Gruesome stories and folktales are depicted and many are probably not familiar to the reader. It covers a wide geographical range. Words You May Not Know is helpful to the reader. You are referred to Internet references. Further Reading, and a Bibliography are included in the Contents. It may be the most popular one of the series for the adult reader who is perhaps more familiar with the historical pieces. Some of the references may be surprising since we do not think of them being linked to vampires, werewolves and other creatures. The author watched the TV series Dark Shadows growing up. She enjoys reading, studying the history, psychology, and mythology that is interwoven with stories of the supernatural. She has degrees in psychology and writing. Reviewer: Naomi Butler
