Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kellogg (The Pied Piper's Magic) offers a jubilant interpretation of this deceptively simple story by the late Krauss, originally published in 1987 as Big and Little. Through light-infused and highly textural paintings that feature a brilliant palette, Kellogg presents a paean to parent-child love, nature, and the imagination-unleashing power of books. As a mother cat and her kitten explore the natural world, the mother carries a book, its pages and cover changing to mirror, on a smaller scale, their surroundings: forest, field, sea, and sky. On the surface, the notion of opposite sizes drives the understated, free-form narrative ("big forests love little trees; big seas love little shells; big stories love little words to fly around in"). Expansive scenes of a turbulent sea or a slightly frightening city at night alternate with closeup images of mother and son, cementing the message of reassurance at the heart of the story. Kellogg cleverly integrates books into his artwork; they become archways on a forest path, a sailboat, and city buildings. A welcome revival of this gem of a tale. Ages 1–4. (Oct.)
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Kellogg has chosen to illustrate Krauss's spare but evocative text from 1987 as a loving journey of an anthropomorphic cat and her kitten. The title is the repeated refrain. In "...big forests" they begin their outing on the first double page; "...love little trees," they note together; "...big fields/love little flowers"; "big monkeys/love little monkeyshines/and I love you," as they continue their journey. As the book reassuringly concludes, "big dark streets/love little street lamps." At bedtime, the kitten is crowned a king who loves "a little butter on their bread" with a good night hug "and I love you." Kellogg begins the visual tale on the front end pages with an open book from which letters join balloons and butterflies in floating away into the brilliant sunlit orange sky. On the half title page, the kitten is bringing the book to his mother. On the title page, a book becomes the portal through which she takes him on the journey while she also carries it along. Inked lines and watercolors produce the effective settings, like the rolling breakers of the "big seas" or the landscape of the "big fields." The obvious love is conveyed throughout. As night falls in the end, the letters float out through the window, to join balloons over the night sea on the back end pages. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Krauss's simple text, originally published as Big and Little (Scholastic, 1987), is given a fresh look. Each spread suggests a big thing that loves something smaller. Most of the objects are familiar, like "Big forests love little trees" and "Big fields love little flowers." One exception is when Krauss states that "Big monkeys love little monkeyshines." Modern readers may wonder what "monkeyshines" are, and the illustration seems a little out of step with the rest of the book. The message of the whole, however, is clear and comforting: big people love and value youngsters. Kellogg illustrates the short text with perhaps his most artsy work yet. He uses translucent watercolor blues, greens, and yellows that suffuse the artwork with light. Starbursts, balloons, and butterflies fill the air around the main characters. The artist's recent use of textured surfaces in his painting, as in The Pied Piper's Magic (Dial, 2009), is here extended to a greater degree and the textures add dimension and interest to the pictures.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT
Kirkus Reviews
Kellogg interprets a poem originally published in 1987 as Big and Little with pastel illustrations by Mary Szilagyi. The most appreciative audience of this edition will likely be adult fans of the author and/or illustrator. But parents and grandparents who enjoy the opportunity to reiterate their love for their little ones will also embrace it. And sharing the book one-on-one should entice at least some young listeners to contemplate the occasionally abstract pairings and examine the illustrator's expansive, imaginative images. Using books as a recurring visual theme and featuring the same large cat/small cat characters allows him to foster a sense of continuity whether Krauss is noting that "big forests...love little trees" or "big dark streets...love little streetlamps." Although his wide-eyed characters look familiar, the backgrounds differ considerably from his usual work, with great splotchy swirls of color and plenty of interesting texture. With lots to look at, talk about and wonder over, this imaginative flight of fancy might also find a place in elementary art or creative-writing classes. Surprisingly and pleasantly offbeat.
