And No Religion Too is a collection of essays about the health and well-being of western Christianity. From Chapter four, The Seduction of Christianity, Edward Goble writes:"John the Baptist wondered about Jesus. Jesus didn’t seem to do things the way people expected. When John was put in prison he sent some of his disciples to Jesus with a question. They asked, “Are you the One, or should we look for another?” It was a good question, straight to the point. John wanted to know if it was all worth it. Had he really heard what he thought he’d been hearing from God all these years? Jesus said,“Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” Luke 7:22,23What a great response. That is the essence of Jesus. That is the part that many thousands of well-meaning ministers like myself have forgotten. He doesn’t do things the way you expect. Blessed is he who isn’t offended, doesn’t stumble, because I’m not what you expected. Jesus doesn’t do “same place, same thing,” ministry. He is new, fresh, unique and one of a kind. John might have been expecting someone different, someone that fit his perception of what the Messiah would be like. Jesus breaks the mold and asks John to hang in there, to look at what He’s done and just believe.Just like the unique God-ideas He plants in young believers hearts, that is how He works. Jesus never healed two people in the same exact way. He mixed it up. When He sent the Holy Spirit, the baptism came a little differently each time. He doesn’t allow people to put Him in a box. He won’t be shackled to a religious system, no matter how biblically accurate it’s doctrine. He made that plenty clear when the veil of the old way ripped apart at His resurrection. He is the Lord of the New Thing. He is Creator God. When He puts an idea on a young, eager soul, it is meant to propel that person into a life of adventure with Christ. We tend to squelch these God-ideas and, vocationally, assume that the only place to serve Him is in the pastorate. But it isn’t."And No Religion Too is a call to the leaders of local churches and denominational organizations. With a loving, humorous admonishment, Edward Goble calls the church to wake up to the simplicity of Christ.
