Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Berman's book is a credible effort that will draw teen readers into the world of crazy sports stories. The title is quite accurate. Most of the one- and two-paragraph anecdotes are weird, wacky, amazing, or a combination of the three; however, that fact does not make the tales laugh-out-loud funny. They are amusing but not much more. For instance, one anecdote tells of a baseball game in which three home runs were hit on three consecutive pitches. Another tells of a basketball player who made an incredible shot while on his back. Berman tries to spice up the stories at times with his own brand of "roll-your-eyes" humor. The book is nicely divided into sections such as baseball, basketball, football, and soccer so that readers can skip to their favorite sports. Teen readers who enjoy sports will peruse this book with interest. In addition, Berman's book will make its way into the hands of many reluctant readers who are intimidated by long stories or novels. Unfortunately there is no list of further reading for teens who want more. Teens (and librarians) might want to start with Berman's first book of this kind, And Nobody Got Hurt! The World's Weirdest, Wackiest True Sports Stories (Little, Brown, 2005). There are many books like this one, but Berman's will still be a good but not essential purchase because it is very up-to-date.
School Library Journal

Gr 3-7 This book is chock-full of bloopers and bizarre happenings. The yarns are grouped by sport, with short chapters devoted to football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and a catch-all at the end. Berman, a well-known sportscaster, writes as he speaks, and his jovial style will engage reluctant readers. While most of the stories involve bungles and missteps from the past decade, a fair amount of unusual sports history from the 20th century is sprinkled in, especially in the chapter devoted to the Olympics. The book's appeal is not limited to sports lovers. Berman does a nice job of explaining the basic rules of each game, and the final chapter deals with decidedly nontraditional competitions including eat-offs and pulling trucks with one's ears. Throughout, Gamble's caricaturelike drawings maintain the light tone. However, sticklers for detail will notice that in the illustrations, numbers on players' uniforms don't always match their actual team numbers. Purchase this volume where there is solid demand for Berman's first collection or where sports almanacs and trivia books are popular.-Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

Another winning book in this series!

The new book And Nobody Got Hurt 2, The World¿s Weirdest, Wackiest, Most Amazing True Stories, by Len Berman, continues this very successful series. Mr. Berman¿s book is geared to young readers but will appeal to all sports fans. The book is cleverly divided by sports including the Olympics this time around. Where else can you read about a professional soccer player who was bribed out of retirement with pizza or a college football team that won two games in one day? There are lots of humorous tales including a young singer falling on the ice after forgetting the lyrics to the national anthem. As the author writes, you can¿t make this stuff up! Your heart will be touched by the inspiring stories of people like Olympic skier, Ivan Borisov and basketball player, Jason McElwain. It makes a great gift for any sports fan. Remember the original And Nobody Got Hurt, too.
