Overview

Part of a Verve reproduction reissue series, the packaging on this CD is merely a shrunken-down LP, with microscopic liner notes that cannot be read without a magnifying glass. They are reproduced in a folded insert but are dated and a bit pointless. The music, featuring tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, is worthwhile and deserves much better than this thoughtless approach. The selections are drawn from five different sessions from the 1953-1955 period, with Getz joined by valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer or trumpeter Tony Fruscella on two songs apiece and by either Lou Levy, Jimmy Rowles, or John Williams on the quartet/quintet numbers. The music is swinging and enjoyable, if not essential. Hopefully, these performances will reappear again in the near future as part of a more logical and tasteful reissue series.
