Overview

From actor Dirk Benedict comes this brilliant autobiographical telling of two unique and engrossing events that had an enormous impact on his life. He intertwines the story of his wife’s unexpectedly complicated home birthing with his own coming of age in Montana—and the violent death of his father. Past events of love, friendship, hatred, and fatherhood culminate in a dramatic explosion before him, linking his father’s death with the birth of his first child.B

Benedict’s writing style is lively, creative, and always engaging. His use of humor, pathos, and imagery is masterful. He has taken two rites of passage in his life and woven them together to produce a story that is every bit as entertaining as it is moving. Given Dirk’s unique storytelling ability and well-honed sense of timing, And Then We Went Fishing will keep you hooked from page one to its powerful, poignant conclusion.

From the author of Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy comes a dramatic, autobiographical tale--two stories deftly woven into an engrossing narrative--in which a child's birth triggers memories of the author's father's death . A memorable recounting of Benedict's own rites of passage.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Life and death are the themes of this intriguing book by Benedict, author of Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy (Avery, 1991). Benedict's father was shot by his brother years earlier. Now, Benedict's wife is giving birth at home. Complications arise with the birth, resulting in Benedict's reliving his father's life and death in between his wife's contractions. As things become more complicated, he takes his wife on a desperate race to the hospital for the final episode in the ordeal, which results in a strapping son named after his father. The intertwining of what happened in the past with the events of the present makes for an excellent story. The humor, drama, and frustration that Benedict experiences results in a moving book for all levels of readers. For most public libraries.-- H. Robert Malinowsky, Univ. of Illinois, Chicago

Inspiration Author and very down to earth

To be able to read and understand what "Templetom 'Faceman' Peck" went through in his real life brought some insight to the type of person that he is. With everything that life threw at Mr. Benedict, he has still come through with having a positive outlook to life. I was blessed with meeting Mr. Benedict in person, and his writings portray who he is very well. I would recommend this author and all his books to anyone...and I have. :-)

    Fascinating and Real

I enjoyed this fateful story, both as a father and a son. The feelings that overwhelm many of us who have young kids are not just the province of mothers, and this story tranlates those feelings into something all men can relate to exceedingly well. My only complaint is the overuse of quotes from Hamlet to fill out the scanty length. I wish the author could have put more of himself into it instead of relying on Shakespeare to do it for him. But when the author speaks, its wonderful. By the way, I bought this for my PocktPC from PeanutPress.com. It was readable, and less expensive. Glad to see MSReader books are finally arriving at Barnes and Noble online site. You get my business!
