In 2006 Enya released her most subtle and song-oriented album to date. Amarantine may have paled in comparison to Watermark or Shepherd Moons, but its under-produced (in Enya-world) balladry was a small leap forward for the reclusive Irish superstar. 2008's And Winter Came follows in the same footsteps as Amarantine, but it hints at the grandeur of earlier recordings, specifically 1994's Christmas EP. Enya's ferociously multi-tracked recording style lends itself well to the season, filling in the simplistic lyrical holes with small avalanches of vocal harmonies and the dated but reliable keyboard patches that have come to define the singer/composer's work over the years. Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan have crafted a pleasant little snow globe of an album that sounds exactly like one would expect from the longtime collaborators. For the most part the formula is intact, boasting a soft Edward Scissorhands-inspired intro, copious amounts of secular and non-secular ballads (all original), and two or three upbeat, midtempo jams to break the stillness. Of the former, the lovely and reverent "Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is the most effective, while the galloping "White Is in the Winter Night" leads the pack for the latter. There are copious amounts of "stars in the skies" and "bells ringing," and even a surprising left turn (maybe even a complete u-turn) near the end on "My! My! Time Flies!," a straight-up "Beatlesque" pop tune with drums and a screaming guitar solo that sounds like something off of a late-'60s Bee Gees record. As usual, Enya fans will be pleased with the results while non-believers will find that the same arguments against her are still valid, but in the end And Winter Came is an undeniably welcome addition to the holiday season, if only for its effortless, white, spray-painted pinecone elegance and potpourri-scented, gift shop comforts.

    Amazing Artist, Wonderful CD!

My family first heard Imogen's "Just For Now" in the movie "The Holiday" and liked it immediately. But it was my daughter who got me hooked on the CD. Her music is mysterious, ethereal, complex, powerful, and quite beautiful!

    And Winter Came

Is a great album that really brings back the old Enya from the march of the Celts and Memory of Trees and Shepherd Moon. Most of these songs are sung in Gaelic which in itself is a very beautiful language.

Enya and Christmas: A perfect combination.

"And Winter Came..." is a wonderful collection of mostly original Christmas numbers that conjures the old Enya sound from "The Memory of Trees" and "Shepherd Moons"--something that was not very present in "Amarantine" (though I liked "Amarantine" very much). A few sure-fire hits include "Trains and Winter Rains", "White Is In the Winter Night" (which is hard to get out of your head after the first listen), "One Toy Soldier", and "My, My! Time Flies!" (which oddly made me think about Kate Bush's music). Her settings of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and "Oíche Chiún" (an improvement, I think on the original release) are also deeply soulful and effective.

A refreshing must have for any Enya fan, and an overall nice holiday album. It's nice to hear the old Enya is still around.

And Winter Came... Another Instant Enya Classic

I throughly enjoyed this CD. Enya is a personal favorite and this CD is particulary enjoyable to listen to. Tracks 3,8 and 11 are the ones I listen to the most. Very original and uplifting. All of the songs have that "Enya" quality that allows one to relax and just enjoy.

Enya's voice is uplifting and soothing. This is a must for anyone who stresses out over the hectic winter holiday season.

Enya's voice is so soothing. Even though this is a Christmas CD, I still find it relaxing at anytime; it works great to relieve stress, especially when driving. Her voice is unique, soft, gentle, uplifting and sweet. Her voice and music are unique. I know I will enjoy this for years to come. It is one of my favorite destressors.

    Fantastic CD

I have every Enya CD and I was excited to hear this one. I was not disappointed at all. The music was soothing and wonderful to listen to, and although her style is very specific...it wasn't like listening to the same song over and over. Familiar but yet different enough to be interesting. I love it.

    Eh?

I'm a bit of an Enya fan. I'd like to say that this album is good. But if I had to place it next to her other albums, it would not rank very high. Most of the songs are very mellow and monotonous. She seems to have lost the perfect mix of down- and upbeat songs and music she was sporting on A Day Without Rain. However, she is a little more playful with her music on the very Beatles-esque "My! My! Time Flies!" which features a modest guitar solo (something I haven't heard from her since the Celts). The sound itself comes off here and there as though it is a little more powerful, such as in "Trains and Winter Rains," but that is not an overall trend on this CD. I do not think this album is as good as Amarantine and is nowhere near the album A Day Without Rain is. But it is still pleasant and better than many things out there on the shelves.

    Enya for Christmas

For anyone on your list that you know loves Enya. Some of the tracks go off the beaten track for her but the soulful, almost erie, sound of Enya comes through. I bought it on release day because I could not wait. Enya lovers do not hesitate to buy this CD.
