Barnes & Noble - Moira McCormick
STIGMATA marks the film-scoring debut of Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan who collaborates here with keyboardist/composer Mike Garson. Together they fashion atmospheric, electronica-laced instrumental pieces meant to evoke the mystical phenomena at the film's core. Over half this soundtrack -- the second half -- is comprised of the Corgan/Garson score, and it's nice and moody. The first half, though, is the one that'll have you cranking up the stereo. It kicks off with a remix of "Mary Mary" by radical Brit-rockers Chumbawamba remember them?, makes another nod to the Mother of God in Remy Zero's "Gramarye," and then Björk takes over with the heady "All Is Full of Love" from her most recent album, HOMOGENIC. A driving, deliciously skewed new track, "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell," is the most entertaining thing David Bowie's done lately it's from his upcoming album, HOURS; STIGMATA's other debut is pop ingenue Natalie Imbruglia's performance of the Corgan-penned "Identify." Coolest of the cool are the previously-released "Release," a collaboration between religious icon Sinéad O'Connor and the pancultural Afro Celt Sound System; and Massive Attack's utterly seductive "Inertia Creeps" from last year's album MEZZANINE. STIGMATA leaves its mark.
