    Folksongs From the Heart

Again, I am moved to tears by the incredibly beautiful voice of this young man. His versatility is infinite, his sound divine. I wrote a review of his recording of Vivaldi's Stabat Mater. Now, I am pressed, again, by his interpretation of these ageless folk songs, ballads and chanties, to share my thoughts with other fans of this gifted, young man. It is enough that Andreas Scholl is singing, with a genuine, heartfelt love for song but, also, the music that accompanies his songs is artistically arranged with a kaleidoscope of the best sounds the many instruments used can produce. They have a purity to match Scholl's voice but are subtle and enhancing and do not override it. Their "voices' shine on their own-In delicate but well balanced unity. I believe I hear a little John Jacob Niles in this performance. At age 4, I sat on his lap while he sang, "I Dream of Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair"-around 1938 -that makes me a veteran ballad lover and this recording takes me back to kinder, gentler times. Would that songs and ballads could quell the upheaval in the wotld, right now. If you need a break from THE WAR, turn OFF the TV and close your eyes while you listen to this CD. You will emerge a more peaceful and serene person. "Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks or bend a knotted oak" Wm. Congreve. This CD will do it all. Again, I promise you!

    almost too beautiful for words

This is the best and most beautiful arrangement of ballads I have ever heard---just hauntingly beautiful by a gifted, strong counter-tenor.
