Children's LiteratureThis traditional biography in the "Profiles of the Presidents" series presents the public highlights of the life of the seventeenth president of the United States, from his days as a tailor in Tennessee to his turbulent times as president after the Civil War. The self-educated Andrew Johnson was vice president under Abraham Lincoln and was sworn in as president after Lincoln was assassinated. Johnson is notable as the first president to be impeached. The author does not gloss over the less attractive aspects of Johnson's life, such as his racism or the fact that he once owned slaves, but the text falters when trying to describe the complicated factors of the Civil War and Reconstruction. A staid layout and illustrations do little to inspire younger readers to spend time with biographies. Includes an index, a timeline of Johnson's life, a timeline of world events during his life, and a listing of U.S. presidents. 2003, Compass Point Books, Ages 8 to 11.
