    An old childhood favorite

When I was just a little girl my mother worked in the children's section of our local library. As soon as I knew my letters I was allowed to help put away books. Naturally, I had to stop to read many of them and I have lots of fond memories of them. One of my all-time favorites was Andy and the Lion. At the time I didn't realize it was basically a retelling of the Androcles and the Lion story, I just knew I loved it. It's the story of a young boy with a vivid imagination who one day comes face to face with one of his fantasies. The way the story is told, with the narrative continuing onto the next page before there is a period, really keeps a childs attention. I recently tried it on a group of 3 and 4 year olds and they wanted it over and over again. The simple line illustrations are really quite eye-catching and yet leave lots of room for imagination. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who even has contact with children. And if you're a grown-up fan of children's literature as I am, it will make a wonderful addition to your library.

I use Andy and the Lion in my third grade Core Knowledge history unit of Ancient Rome. It provides a text-to-text connection for the Roman myth, Androcles and the Lion! My students loved both stories, and were able to make great comparisons.

For expanding Text-to-Text Connections in Roman Mythology, Andy and the Lion is a must to have in your literacy collection. It is a great companion piece to the Roman myth, Androcles and the Lion!
